Responsible Finance Forum 2011 | Netherlands

Investor Principles for Responsible Finance

The Second Annual Responsible Finance Forum (RFF II) was organized in January 27, 2011 by the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs at the Hague, jointly with Her Royal Highness Queen Máxima of the Netherlands in her capacity as the UN Secretary-General’s Special Advocate for Inclusive Finance for Development, and delivered in collaboration with BMZ/GIZ, CGAP, and IFC.

Highlights

The Forum focused on how investors could support or incentivize potential investees as responsible microfinance providers.  Over 40 asset managers and institutional investors signed the Principles for Investors in Inclusive Finance, which was developed by a working group of investors and practitioners. The Principles were launched by Queen Máxima as the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Advocate (UNSGSA) for Inclusive Finance for Development.

The Principles aimed to raise awareness among investors to integrate responsible finance practices for microfinance institutions and end-clients. The Principles were developed in 2010 during which a broad consultation process took place. By signing the Principles, investors demonstrated their commitment to actively support and encourage the sustainable development of the microfinance sector.  Key takeaways and next steps included the following:

  • Establish a steering committee for implementation and operationalization of the Principles for Investors in Inclusive Finance
  • Develop a tracking and monitoring framework to assess progress
  • Engage stakeholders such as governments, investors, DFIs and MFIs to improve practices, as well as reinforce regulation and policies promoting responsible inclusive financial sectors
  • Share best practices and harmonize investor tools
